Louise Scialdone, 58, won a $10 million verdict in her bus accident lawsuit against the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). Scialdone, a Somerville resident, was hit by a bus in early 2004 on an icy day when the driver lost control and fishtailed onto the sidewalk. Her lawsuit claims that the bus driver was driving too fast for the road conditions, causing her to suffer brain damage which affects her balance, memory, and cognitive skills such as reading.
The MBTA, which has been facing financial trouble in recent years, had offered only $1 million to settle the case before trial; Scialdone and her lawyers were asking for $9 million.
